VBALL | Hurricanes to travel to Nova Scotia this weekend

November 1, 2018

The men’s and women’s volleyball Hurricanes will be on the road this weekend to play games against the MSVU Mystics and Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons.  The women will visit the Mystics, in Halifax, on Saturday at 2pm before taking on the Dragons, in Church Point, at 11am on Sunday; the men will challenge the Dragons at 1pm on Sunday in their season opener.

The women’s team is 2-0 after they defeated the Dal AC Rams and Mount Allison Mounties in straight sets last weekend, while the MSVU Mystics, also 2-0, picked up victories over the UNBSJ Seawolves and STU Tommies so far this season.

The Dragons enter the weekend at 0-2, having dropped matches to the Mounties and Rams.

Brittany States and Abby Hyndman led the attack last weekend for the Hurricanes, picking up 14 and 13 kills respectively in the two combined matches.

The men’s Hurricanes will finally kick-off their season on Sunday when they take on the Université de Sainte-Anne. The ‘Canes were a perfect 5-0 last season against the Dragons.

The Dragons will also begin their regular season this weekend; they take on the STU Tommies on Saturday before playing host to the ‘Canes on Sunday.

The Hurricanes have many returning players in their lineup, including Brett Butler, Jeff MacDonald, Marcus Lapointe, Keith Johnston, Nicholas Menzies, and Aaron Pugh.

All six were key contributors for the ‘Canes last season which saw them finish the regular season in first place with an 13-2 record, before falling in the ACAA finals to the STU Tommies.

There are four new names on the ‘Canes roster, including Zach Thibodeau, Riley O’Keefe, Kamden Arsenault, and Ethan Nadeau. The ‘Canes will feature four Islanders this year in Butler, Thibodeau, Arsenault, and Johnston.

The men’s and women’s Hurricanes will play their next home games on Saturday, November 17 at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.  The women will play at 4:30pm versus the Dal AC Rams with the men’s home-opener to follow, versus the Dragons, at 6:30pm.
